The top 12 metres of the RHW Chimney has now been demolished removing the distinctive RHW lettering that could be seen across the Eastern Suburbs. Following a series of storm events and a lighting strike in early December 2024, the upper part of the chimney suffered significant structural damage, causing extensive cracking through bricks and mortar joints. Sadly photographic evidence and structural reports assessed the chimney as unsafe, and the bricks unsuitable for recovery and impractical for re-use. #woollahra #paddington #paddingtonsydney

In the City of Sydney, timber cottages, are historically significant and represent an important part of the city's architectural heritage. These cottages, often among the oldest buildings, contribute to the unique character of their streets and offer a glimpse into Sydney's past. However, they are becoming increasingly rare and are facing threats of demolition as the city develops. #paddington #paddingtonsydney #houses #sydneylife #ilovesydney #sydneyaustralia #sydneysuburbs #streetsofsydney #whatsonwoollahra #cityofsydney
When Jeffrey Jonas bought his property in Selwyn Street Paddington in 1959 it was a very different place from the charming suburb it is today. “I’d ask my mates to visit my property after the pub closed,” Jeff recalls, “and even as young men, they said it was far too dangerous at night”. A property developer has been blocked from converting the Selwyn Street boarding houses into luxury apartments in what some say could be a precedent-setting legal ruling. The developer took the City of Sydney to court after the council rejected its proposal to convert the 32-room boarding house, which once provided sanctuary to vulnerable residents, into four luxury homes. The application in the NSW Land and Environment Court was rejected on Thursday on the grounds of social impact and the loss of affordable housing. #clovermoore #paddington #cityofsydney
Pub buildings are located throughout Paddington and have important historical, aesthetic and social significance that contribute to Paddington’s character. Most pubs in Paddington are substantial buildings ranging in height from two to four storeys. They date from the 1840s through to the 1940s and are prominent place markers, often located on corner sites. The landmark Sydney pub, The Imperial, at the corner of Oxford and Underwood Streets, Paddington was established by Henry Challener in 1874. Originally known as the Cross Guns Hotel, the name was changed to the Imperial in 1891.Photo ©️Lee Pearce 1960 #imperialpaddo #paddopubs #woollahra #sydneypubs

Adaption of the roof void areas of the principal building forms of Victorian and Federation period dwellings was a traditional building method to increase the area available for bedrooms. Typically light and ventilation was provided to these attic level rooms by constructing a dormer window located vertically within the principal roof planes. One of the most celebrated intersections in Paddington. Corner of Underwood and William Sts. Corner shops and corner commercial buildings are typically one or two storeys in height and are often located at cross streets. Corner shops are usually the corner terrace of a row of terraces, but may be a corner building on their own. Often they have an angled entry elevation, as well as elevations on two street sides, all of which are built to the boundary. This year, the Queen Victoria Gates of Paddington’s Victoria Barracks was opened to welcome the local community to join the men and women of the Australian Defence Force to come together and commemorate ANZAC Day. The event provided a unique opportunity for military members and the community to connect, share in the traditions of service, and pay tribute to the enduring legacy of the ANZACs.

Looks like 1 Oxford Street is close to completion with a tree on top. Planting trees on building sites when the top is reached, a practice known as a "topping-out ceremony," is a traditional builders' rite, marking the completion of a structure's highest beam or structural element. It's a symbolic celebration of the project's progress and a sign of good fortune. #paddingtonsydney #sydneyheritage #woollahra #cityofsydney
Woollahra Council has allocated funding under the 2024/25 Traffic Capital Works Program to install an at-grade pedestrian crossing on Glenmore Road, east of the Five Ways roundabout. The proposed treatments will improve crossing opportunities and pedestrian safety at this location. The proposal will not result in the loss of legal parking spaces. #paddington #woollahra #fiveways
The vast majority of timber buildings in Paddington are single storey workers’ cottages constructed between 1840 and 1870. These buildings were built to accommodate local artisans and working class families who played an important role in the development of the Paddington village. Timber buildings in Paddington continue to make an important contribution to the character of the conservation area and should be conserved. #timbercottages #paddingtonsydney #woollahra #sydneyheritage
The Royal Hotel at Five Ways built in 1888, is the only hotel in Paddington with overhanging 'iron lace' balconies'. The pubs in Paddington generally have an imposing presence with distinctive parapet profiles, modulated façades, window and door openings and ornate architectural detailing. Building materials include stone, brick, stucco, timber, glazed tiles and terracotta. Paddo pubs display a diverse range of architectural styles including Victorian, Federation and Inter-War buildings. #paddington #sydneyheritage #woollahra

Corner of Sutherland Street and Jersey Road from TPS archives. Nowadays the Woollahra LGA has a rich heritage of private and publicly owned trees.
These trees provide an important contribution to the beauty, character and history that make our area such a desirable place to live. WMC are working with the community to protect high-value trees and to ensure new trees are planted for the next generation. #woollahra #paddingtonsydney
The City of Sydney worked with the community to develop a public toilet strategy, which identified the need for additional public toilets across the City of Sydney local area. A lack of public toilets can greatly impact people with high needs such as families with children, older people, people with disability or people with medical conditions. Some may avoid, or be reluctant to travel or take part in social activities where public facilities are lacking. The city’s public toilets are well used by people walking and riding, workers, commuters and visitors to our parks and outdoor recreation facilities. Adopting native gardening principles will influence the animals and birds that visit your backyard. Your garden can provide important resources for native wildlife including food, water, and protective habitat for birds, lizards, possums, frogs and beneficial insects. Well-designed gardens can help protect native animals from introduced or over-aggressive native species and act as an important stepping stone between bushland reserves in the Woollahra area.
